In what looks like a shocking turn of events, a Mom’s brand new iPhone X was unlocked by his son. Imagine, buying a $1000 smartphone and seeing your son using it without any problems because of a gimmick in the way the phone unlocks. This comes at a time when the world is arguing about Apple’s new face detection technology i.e. the Face ID and whether or not it is secure enough compared to the good old and reliable Touch ID. The departure of Touch ID from the iPhone x is still debated but the video in question makes the case for the touch ID really strong.
Attaullah Malik posted a video on YouTube which went viral and got close to 1.5 million views; for the right reasons of course. Sana Sherwani and her husband made the discovery quite some time back and were shocked to see their 10-year-old unlocking the iPhone X with ease. In the video, we can see that the face ID on the iPhone X is fooled by Ammar Malik, the son of Ms Shana. It doesn’t even need a second attempt or anything like that as it is easily unlocked by him. In another video, we can see two brothers unlocking an iPhone X at the same time back-to-back.
Touch ID was like the gold standard of unlocking an iPhone but Apple went ahead and replaced it with a bunch of fancy sensors.
Apple wobbled about the technological superiority of the Face ID on the new iPhone X a lot and how it is more secure than touch ID. Tim Cook even went ahead to say that the chances of error with the Face ID is 1 in a million compared to 1 in 50,000 on the touch ID. The front of the phone has 5 sensors including a true depth camera that projects and analyzes more than 30,000 invisible dots to create a precise depth map of your face in order for the Face ID to work effectively. Still, it failed to recognize the massive age difference and above all a different gender of the person unlocking it.
Now in many cases the faces of a child and parent maybe are familiar but Face ID providing access to a separate gender is a different thing altogether. It may not be comforting to someone as you can use Face ID to make payments in Apple pay as well. I know that face ID is a new technology and with time face ID will improve but until then we have to live with what we have right now.
Are you still going to buy an iPhone X despite these reports? Tell us in the comments below what you think.
