Wales football legend Gareth Bale has always been a golf fan and will now put his skills to the test against the likes of US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick in California. Bale has confirmed he will be involved in a PGA Tour competition just two weeks after retiring from football. The former Tottenham and Real Madrid star will feature in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which boasts a hefty prize fund of $9million (£7.3m).

As many as 156 pro golfers are set to take part between February 2-5 including US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick, as well as Jordan Spieth and Luke Donald, alongside 156 amateurs. Bale will be among the celebrity cast in California, with actors Bill Murray and Jason Bateman joining the likes of musician Macklemore, with thousands of spectators expected at Pebble Beach.

Bale’s Retirement and Future in Golf

Bale announced earlier this month that he would be calling time on his playing career after a spell in the United States with Los Angeles FC. It remains to be seen what Bale will do next but he has confirmed he will take part in a PGA Tour in California at the start of February.

As of last year, he was playing off a very respectable handicap of two, something he is likely to work on further now he has hung up his boots. Speaking back in 2020 he said: “Football is my No.1 sport. I’m paid to do it and I always give my best. Golf is a hobby like anyone else would have a hobby.

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will be a great opportunity for Bale to showcase his golf skills and see how he stacks up against some of the best players in the world. With a prize fund of $9 million (£7.3m) and 156 pro golfers set to take part, including US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick and world number five Patrick Cantlay, the competition will be fierce.

Celebrity Participation

Bale will also be among a celebrity cast, including actors Bill Murray and Jason Bateman, as well as musician Macklemore. Thousands of spectators are expected to attend the event, which will take place between February 2-5.
